Transportation Design

OTIE serves our customers rural and urban transportation engineering needs with over 20 registered professional engineers in our Appleton, Milwaukee, and Madison offices. Our projects involve alignment improvements, capacity expansions, and safety enhancements. Our freeway experience includes engineering improvements to on/off ramps and interchange upgrades. We have designed roundabouts for increased traveler safety and reduction in travel delay. In support of our transportation customers, we manage environmental issues relating to wetlands, farmlands, 4(f) lands, archaeology sites, and potential hazardous materials.

OTIE served WisDOT with design for the full diamond interchange and the relocation and alignment of CTH Y. OTIE completed the right of way plat, environmental document, utility coordination, and preliminary and final plans for a new bridge across STH 29. Our design involved both rural and urban design including storm sewer and several retaining walls. Our design was nominated for 2006 Excellence in Highway Design Awards "Best Rural Project" and also for "Best Bridge Project."

OTIE designed for the complex rural and urban reconstruction for 12 miles of STH 16, requiring right of way acquisition of 135 parcels. OTIE's design included correction of 33 substandard vertical curves, replacement of 3 box culverts, and reconstruction of the Crawfish River Bridge. Through a series of public information meetings, newsletters, and meetings with individual property owners, OTIE built consensus for the project. With WisDOT agreement, OTIE added details to accommodate property owners' concerns.

OTIE designed reconstruction of 1.4 miles of urban roadway for STH 81 in Platteville, WI. Our design included intersection and vertical alignment improvements that matched the existing residents’ yards and driveways, storm sewer reconstruction, environmental documentation, and extensive public involvement with residents and business leaders. We added aesthetic enhancements including decorative lighting, stamped and colored concrete, and decorative fencing.
